This brilliant new feature could be available on your next Mac monitor.

Apple has built a robust ecosystem of smart home products that interact with its HomeKit framework, and if the company's latest big vision comes to life, we could see an interesting new addition. If it does, your Mac's display may become a useful smart home component.

The information comes from journalist Mark Gurman, who has previously disclosed reliable information regarding Apple's future plans. According to Gurman's Power On newsletter, Apple is working on a Mac monitor that might double as a smart home display when your Mac is idle.

This new display, like the Studio Display that Apple presently sells, would include an iOS chip. However, unlike the A13 chip found inside the Studio Display, which controls the screen's camera and audio output, the new monitor's chip would provide further functionality not seen in the Studio Display

.

Gurman, for example, believes it might display information such as notifications and the weather when your connected Mac is in low power mode. This would elevate the gadget from a simple Mac monitor to a general-purpose smart home display.

This will be a familiar concept if you witnessed Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. During the event, Apple revealed a new feature in iOS 17 called StandBy, which displays widgets, Live Activities, photographs, and more while your iPhone is charging on its side. This intriguing new monitor appears to work in a similar manner.

Gurman says Apple is working on many other monitors in addition to the smart home display. While the writer didn't reveal much about the goods, they might be improvements to the Studio Display and Apple's Pro Display XDR, which hasn't been updated since it was released alongside the Mac Pro in 2019.

Expect will be unable to obtain one of these displays anytime soon. Gurman believes they're still a long way off, with a tentative release date of 2024 "at the earliest.

" We'll simply have to wait and watch what movements Apple takes, and whether the firm is capable of shaking up the world of smart home displays in the way it desires.
