When the iPhone 15 is introduced later this year, one of the worst-kept secrets in Cupertino, California (if anyone is actually attempting to keep it that is) will be the switch from Apple's proprietary Lightning connection to USB-C. That's most likely owing to the European Union, and in general, that's a good thing because proprietary cables are bad for you, even if they're fantastic for Apple. (And, in some ways, better for the product.)
That would leave AirPods as the sole survivor of Lightning. And when we say "lone," we mean all of the present AirPods. That includes AirPods Pro, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Max. They are all still using Lightning (and may have wireless charging cases).
However, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who writes in his weekly email, Power On, the AirPods' transition to USB-C may eventually begin this year with at least a new case for the AirPods Pro. Apple has yet to make an announcement, and Gurman's story is unsubstantiated. But it's a noticeable shift, and Gurman's research raises many issues. It suggests a new charging case for AirPods Pro and warns against the AirPods Pro 3 (which Apple will most likely simply title "AirPods Pro 3rd Generation") being released at the same time as the iPhone 15.

The second-generation AirPods Pro were released in September 2022, so fully new hardware is perhaps too soon. However, Apple has stated that new sales will include a case that utilises USB-C rather than Lightning. It's unclear whether it'll provide that case a la carte, or whether it'll even be worth "upgrading" to. The same can be said for whether the original AirPods will be available with new USB-C covers.
