The next installment in the Call of Duty video game franchise is a rare direct sequel.
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ll," which will be released on November 10 for Microsoft Xbox Series X, S, and Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 5 and PS4, as well as PCs on Battle.net and Steam ($69.99, rated Mature for ages 17 and above), continues the global battle royale storyline from "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II."
It's the first time the first-person shooter franchise has continued a tale in consecutive years. Activision's multiple studios typically create a Call of Duty game every three years, with each having a unique story arc. In "Modern Warfare III," created by Sledgehammer Games in collaboration with Infinity Ward, Captain Price and Task Force 141 must battle Vladimir Makarov, the new adversary they discovered after thwarting a worldwide threat in "Modern Warfare II."
The previous chapter was a triumph, collecting $1 billion in global sales in the first 10 days after its Oct. 28, 2022 release, according to Activision. "Modern Warfare 3" is available for pre-order on callofduty.com.
On Call of Duty's 20th anniversary, some new features
Those who play the online games "Call of Duty: Warzone" or "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" can choose to participate in a special mission that provides information for the MW3 single-player story campaign. It will be available until Monday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m. PT/1:30 p.m. ET.
Weapons have been unlocked. This will be the first Call of Duty game that allows you to use weapons and other stuff from "Modern Warfare II" in the new MW3.
The Minimap has returned. During multiplayer matches, a red dot will appear when an enemy fires an unrestricted weapon. The feature, which was included in prior games but not in last year's or 2019's "Modern Warfare," was described as "the series' best feature" by pop culture news site Inverse.
More multiplayer maps. Activision claims that the collection in MW3 is the largest ever, including 12 new maps and 16 enhanced maps from the 2009 game "Modern Warfare 2." Large-scale maps for the Ground War, Invasion, and One War modes will also be available on launch day.
Zombies. Players will be able to join forces with other units to face zombie hordes on the largest Call of Duty zombies area ever.
